A Transformed Life

John Stuart Mill had amazing talent. Born in London in May 1806, he was learning Greek by the time he was three. He became a well-trained economist by the age of 16. An influential author, he devoted much of his life to advocating individual liberties and a scientific approach to social, political, and economic change. He also was a sharp critic of Christianity.

In his 1859 essay, “On Liberty,” he had particularly harsh things to say about Christians. He recalled how it was said in the first century, “See how these Christians love one another.” Reflecting on his experiences, Mill observed little love flowing from believers, concluding that this remark was “not likely to be made by anybody now.”

It seemed, to him, that Christianity had made “so little progress.” Why? He knew of no one with a dynamic faith. He saw few noticeable results. It just seemed like a religion of rituals and rules.

One can only wonder how Mill’s life, and all of history, would have been changed if he had known someone with a dynamic faith, a life truly transformed by the power of God, who was filled with joy, peace, and love.

Today, consider the people who see and know you. Are you making an impact on their lives? Is your life filled with love? Dedicate yourself to being a witness for Jesus. Don’t be content with a mediocre faith. Seek to be transformed by God’s power, and a witness for Him.
