A Double Portion

When we trust God through seasons of loss or shame, He promises a double portion of blessings, joy, and favor for those who walk with Him.

“Instead of your shame you will have a double portion, and instead of humiliation they will shout for joy over their portion. Therefore they will possess a double portion in their land, everlasting joy will be theirs.”—Isaiah 61:7 NASB

This prophetic chapter, which Jesus read in Luke 4, tells of a move of God’s Spirit: “The Spirit of the LORD God is upon me” (v. 1). Seeing the needs of His people, God promised good news for the afflicted, liberty for captives, and freedom to prisoners.

It was a time of God’s visitation, “the favorable year of the LORD and the day of vengeance of our God.” He would “comfort all who mourn” (v. 2). Instead of being shaken by the changing times, they would have stability, strength, and joy!

For those who obeyed Him, served Him, and committed their lives to Him, God promised a new wave of blessings—a “double portion”—an extra measure of favor in every area of their lives. They would receive special blessings because they obeyed His Word and walked in an intimate covenant relationship with Him.

Promising to bless their families, God said, “Their offspring will be known among the nations, and their descendants in the midst of the peoples. All who see them will recognize them because they are the offspring whom the Lord has blessed” (v. 9).

Today, God is ready to pour out these blessings on you! Commit your life to Him and remember that He has a plan for your life. Seek the leading of the Holy Spirit. Have compassion for the lost and invest your resources in God’s Kingdom. Let your life be filled with praise!
