Mordecai had a special relationship with his cousin, Esther. “When her father and her mother died, Mordecai took her as his own daughter” (v. 7). He was careful to bring her up in the ways of the Lord.

This training faced a serious test when Esther entered the harem of the king, where she came under the supervision of the king’s eunuch.

There, she lived totally surrounded by Persians and immersed in their ways.

In these conditions, it would have been easy to abandon the principles upon which she’d been raised—to act and believe like the people around her.

But Esther did not compromise. Even in the midst of the Persian culture and religion, she remained true to her faith and continued to follow the patterns taught to her by Mordecai.

Facing similar circumstances, men and women throughout time have failed this test. Even those raised in Christian homes have often failed to stand firm and been guilty of compromise.

In many ways, all Believers face this kind of challenge every day. We’re thrown into offices, schools, and communities where we interact with people with contrary beliefs and standards. We’re assaulted by the media busily preaching standards contrary to Biblical Christianity. How easy it can be to conform and adapt to the ways of the world!

If you feel that it’s impossible to resist the temptation to conform, remember Esther’s example. With God’s help, you can stand strong and resist compromise. You can worship God, no matter what other people say or do. You can serve God and find His favor in any situation.
