Blinded by Arrogance

More than merely confident, Haman was arrogant. He rose to become second in the kingdom, and the king ordered his servants to bow down and pay “homage to Haman” (Esther 3:1-2). But Haman became obsessed by this power and prestige, and he developed an unbalanced view of himself.

He was particularly annoyed when Mordecai would not bow before him. Mordecai’s great accomplishments were forgotten, and Haman determined to have him (and all the Jews) put to death. But Haman eventually was exposed for his evil schemes, and he was hung on the very gallows he’d built for Mordecai.

Haman’s life demonstrates the horrible impact pride can have on a person. If truth be told, any of us can be a victim of pride, usually in a more subtle way. The Bible tells us that “pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall” (Proverbs 16:18). As Haman demonstrated, pride poisons our attitudes and blinds us to our weaknesses.

How do we prevent this pride? Through humility-submitting everything to God.

The Bible tells us, “The wicked in his proud countenance does not seek God; God is in none of his thoughts” (Psalm 10:4). We need to have God in all of our thoughts. We need to make Him the center of our lives, seek Him constantly, and remember that we are His servants.

As we humble ourselves before God, He will help us maintain a balanced understanding of our gifts and talents, as well as our limits. He’ll remind us that we’ve received His blessings so that we might be a blessing. Give Him the praise and glory!

Today, make sure you aren’t guilty of the sins of Haman. Humble yourself before God. Submit your life to Him. Seek first His Kingdom. Allow Him to direct and shape your life.
