God’s Watchful Care

Daily Devotional3 Minutes

Does God stop loving us when He disciplines us? Even while correcting His people, He defended them against those who took advantage—because they were still His.

“Because you said, ‘These two nations and these two countries shall be mine, and we will take possession of them’ … I will deal with you … I will make myself known among them, when I judge you” (Ezekiel 35:10–11).

Because of their sins, God’s people had been judged. God used their neighboring nations to execute this judgment. But these nations took advantage of their position, not realizing that even though God judged His people, He still loved them and would defend them.

God was angry because the nations “gave over the people of Israel to the power of the sword at the time of their calamity” (v. 5). Because they had taken advantage of Israel’s vulnerability, He said they would “know that I am the Lord” (v. 12).

Throughout the Bible, there were times when God was angry with His people, yet He never stopped loving them. They might have needed correction or judgment, but this did not change His love. The land still belonged to Him, and He still had given it to His people.

God heard how Mount Seir (representing Edom) said that “these two countries shall be mine, and we will take possession of them.” But this angered Him, for He still “was there” (v. 10). God said He would act to defend His own and teach a lesson to all who came against them.

God still looks out for His people. Others may try to harm or take advantage of us. But God will accomplish His purposes and defend His people.

God has the same attitude toward you. Even as He disciplines you, He still loves you. You are His!

Reflection Question: Are you trusting God to defend you in vulnerable times?

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Ezekiel 35 reveal about God’s care?

When Edom tried to seize Israel’s land during its judgment, God opposed them—showing that even while He disciplined His people, He still loved and defended them. He declared “I was there,” affirming His watchful care.

Does God still love us when He disciplines us?

Yes. Scripture shows that God’s correction never cancels His love. Even in seasons of discipline, His people remain His own, and He continues to watch over and defend them.
