Depending on the Father Who Never Fails

As we learn about depending on the Father who never fails, Isaiah 63 assures us that when earthly leaders disappoint, our Redeemer from of old remains faithful, steady, and completely trustworthy.

“You, O Lord, are our Father, our Redeemer from of old is your name” (Isaiah 63:16).

Each year, instead of providing the kind of leadership God prescribes, millions of fathers fail to fulfill their proper function in the family. The ripple effect spreads throughout society, as generation after generation feels the impact. But every person and every family can rejoice that we have a Heavenly Father. He is absolutely faithful. We can always depend on Him.

When Jesus taught us to pray, He said we should address “Our Father in heaven” (Matthew 6:9). This angered many Jews who didn’t have this kind of loving relationship with God. But Jesus described His intimate relationship with the Father: “I do nothing on my own authority, but speak just as the Father taught me.” He focused on always doing “the things that are pleasing to him” (John 8:19–29).

The Old Testament also teaches us to think of God as our Father. The cry of Israel recorded in Isaiah tells us that they had depended upon men for leadership, but all these men had fallen short and failed in some way. Ultimately, God’s people realized that He alone was their help – their faithful Father.

If you are a father, seek to be faithful to your calling. Be a good example—God’s witness in your family, work, and community. If your father is living, pray for him and seek to encourage him.

God, Your Heavenly Father, is with you. You can depend on Him—absolutely.
