Loyal and Trustworthy

Loyal and Trustworthy

Having won the hearts of people throughout Israel, David’s son Absalom led a revolt against his father. Taking control of Jerusalem, he declared himself the new king.

As Absalom gained momentum, David fled. But some remained loyal, including his friend Hushai, who returned to Jerusalem at David’s request. David told Hushai to relay important news to Zadok and Abiathar the priests, who would send him messages.

The system worked perfectly. David was kept informed about Absalom’s actions and was spared because these followers were trustworthy.

These men demonstrated important characteristics. The Bible describes how He looks for people who are trustworthy and loyal (Proverbs 21:21). “Faithful” servants, like Zadok and Abiathar, are promised even more responsibilities (Matthew 24:45).

Jesus described how, at the end of the age, God will reward those who are faithful. He will tell them, “Well done, my good and faithful servant” (Matthew 24:21 NLT). They had been trustworthy handling small matters, so they would be given more.

We prove our faithfulness by keeping our promises, by being reliable in every task not just major assignments but things that seem insignificant, and by being trustworthy with the things that belong to others (Luke 16:10-12). Ask God to help you to be loyal and faithful, the kind of person upon whom God can count.
