What Happens to People Who Die and Don’t Know About Jesus?

Melissa HendersonBy Melissa Henderson4 Minutes

Do you know people who have never heard or read about Jesus? What is the reason that they haven’t heard God’s message or learned about Jesus? Questions like these can cause worry, stress, and fear. How can someone go to heaven if they haven’t had the opportunity to know Jesus? What will happen to people who die and never hear about Jesus? Scripture shares important information that will answer these questions and more.

Some folks read or hear about Jesus and choose not to believe. There are also people who never learn about Jesus. Scripture, in the book of Matthew, shares that Jesus sent out the twelve disciples and gave them authority to drive out impure spirits and heal diseases. At each opportunity presented to the twelve, they were told to proclaim the gospel. They were told to share that the kingdom of heaven was near.

Jesus told them not to be afraid. His words were impactful and important. He knew that some would believe and others would doubt.

“Whoever acknowledges me before others, I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven. But, whoever disowns me before others, I will disown before my Father in heaven” (Matthew 10:32-33 NIV).

But, what about the ones who have never heard about Jesus? Will they have a place in heaven?

God knows the answer. His Word gives us a clear message. God has revealed himself since the beginning of creation. Therefore, the choice to believe or not believe is up to each individual.

“For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse” (Romans 1:20 NIV).

Our goal is to share the good news of the gospel through our words and actions. Think of ways you have shown God’s love in everyday moments. A smile, a hug, a shoulder to lean on, a prayer of thanksgiving, a prayer of intervention, and many more opportunities are presented each day.

We are not the judge of others. God is the judge. As Christians, we have wonderful ways to bring people close to God. As we proclaim the gospel and love of Christ, we can change lives for the better.

The Bible tells in Revelation that the one who reads aloud the words of prophecy is blessed. Also, the ones who hear it and take what is written to heart are blessed. Therefore, we are called to share God’s message at all times.

Pray for the people who haven’t heard about Jesus to come to know Him and experience a deep and meaningful relationship with God. Think about the folks in countries far away who are struggling to have daily nourishment, housing, and clothing, and haven’t heard about Jesus. Consider those who are not lacking yet have not learned about Jesus. While each situation is unique, the ways for us to reach out and share the gospel are unending.

Are there folks you can guide in their faith journey? Your gifts and talents are given by God. Use those blessings to bless others and lead them to Jesus. Remember that you are not alone. If you need help reaching out to others, contact trusted clergy, ask Christian friends for prayer, and most importantly, pray to God and seek His will.

“Father, we thank You for the many opportunities to teach others about the love of God. We ask for everyone to be reached and to know You. Amen.”

In His Name,
