Do you ever feel slow … sluggish … in a rut? Do you long to feel invigorated … renewed … purposeful?

What if I could show you how very small daily changes can have a huge impact on your physical, mental, and — most importantly — your spiritual life to give you that “new lease on life.”

Hello everyone and welcome to Strengthen Your Walk! I’m Kim Crabill …

Small changes matter. Statistics show that a small shift from sitting to standing can result in significant health benefits. Leaving your isolating environment and getting out among people reduces the epidemic of loneliness. And spiritual boredom and “sleepiness” can be awakened with small daily choices.

We are familiar with health boot camps … right? Well, today how about we begin a 10-day spiritual boot camp — a detox adventure of sorts. Now, I know our first reaction to the word “detox” is to think of what we can’t enjoy. But instead of thinking of what we can’t have, I propose that we focus on what we can gain: Freedom! Freedom from all that has been slowing us down and freedom to discover all God has planned for us.

As with most of my studies, Spiritual Detox is a curriculum borne from personal experience. My husband Lee had a terrible accident and I suddenly found myself not only his life partner but also his nurse.  Twenty-four, seven.

I began like a trooper … but after a few weeks, I began to slip and become a bit snippy.  Even worse, I found myself justifying my bad behavior: Well, I’m doing everything here! It’s stressful, so it’s OK. Then, when I would apologize to Lee, he made excuses for me! Well, you ARE waiting on me hand and foot … 24/7, doing everything for me …

Rationalizing and justifying my behavior — as I found myself doing — did NOT make it right.

The Bible tells us in Song of Solomon 2:15:

Catch for us the foxes, the little foxes that damage or ruin the vineyards …

I began to realize that being short with my husband wasn’t going to cause a hailstorm of chaos in my home – in the grand scheme, it was a little thing. But my “little things,” like your “little things,” left unchecked will grow larger and become a hazard in our spiritual lives and hindrances to our spiritual growth.

It was during this time that I decided, “Kim, it’s time to do something” … and a spiritual cleansing came to my mind.

You might be wondering why spiritual detoxing is so important. Let me give you two biblical “becauses” and one “benefit.”

1) Why spiritual detoxing?

 Because … it is written,

“Be holy, because I am holy” (1 Peter 1:16 NIV).

Scripture calls us to be set apart from the world (John 17:14-15).

 2) Why spiritual detoxing?

Because scripturally we are told …

“with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self” (Ephesians 4:22).

We are to align our lives to the life — heart, mind, actions, words, and thoughts — of Jesus Christ. We throw off (detox) our carnal nature to be cleansed to be more like Christ.

3) But here’s the biggie … The BENEFIT of detoxing.

2 Timothy 2:21 tells us:

“Those who cleanse themselves … will become instruments for special purposes, made holy, useful to the Master and prepared to do any good work.”

Whoa … cleansing the vessel (that’s you! And that’s me!) makes us … not loved more (He couldn’t love us more than He already does) … but more useful in our Father’s hands … and for those works He calls special.

I’m in … are you? If so, let’s get started.

Each time we meet I’ll pass along scriptures for us to look at. With the scriptures, I’ll give biblical principles or strategies that we’ll refer to as the The Seven “R” Detox Plan. They will guide and instruct us. Our first two R’s are READ and RECOGNIZE. So, until next time, READ the scriptures we have talked about today and see if you RECOGNIZE any little or big things that you’re ready to say DETOX to!

Detoxing … to be holy … that my friend is sure to Strengthen Your Walk.
