If Onlys vs. What Ifs and I Knows

If Onlys vs. What Ifs and I Knows

Kim CrabillBy Kim Crabill4 Minutes

In our quest to experience God’s best for our lives, we have an enemy. He is trying to pile up so many lies in front of us that we can’t see God standing front and center, offering us an incredible future. We have to remember, however, that we have been empowered through Christ not to be deceived (James 1:16). As the enemy whispers lies to us today, our privilege is to tell him, “Just hush up!” Remember, Jesus describes our enemy this way: “He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him…he is a liar and the father of lies” (John 8: 44). We can wield this information as an effective weapon in our continuous battle for our future.

Meanwhile, we can count on our enemy to wield his weapon of “if onlys” against us. Think about that for a minute. How many nights have you lain in bed, unable to sleep, oppressed by regrets for how life might have been? For many years, that was my life. My “if onlys” were all my excuses, all my declarations of “what could have been” but could no longer be because of my past.

If only…I had not been taken from my grandparents.

If only…I had matured and developed in a loving environment.

If only…I had been strong enough not to let those things hurt me.

If only…I could be good enough.

If only…I could be pretty enough, skinny enough, smart enough.

These “if onlys” drained me of hope and chained me to my past. But God showed me a better way to respond to my past and embrace my future.

The flip side to the “if onlys” the enemy throws our way are the “what ifs” of God’s promises.

What if God’s promises are true not only for the Samaritan woman and Abraham but also for you and me?

What if we determined to do what we feel God is telling us to do right now, here, today?

What if we began to see our lives not as a series of unfortunate circumstances and hurts, but rather as perfect for God’s use?

What if we believed God was always working—not hurriedly or hastily, but deliberately and sometimes for years—with those He expects to use greatly?

What if we believed God has been readying us as His instruments, allowing us to see His power, so that at His perfect moment we would be equal to every task for which He created us?

What if we let our “if onlys” and our excuses become catalysts to finding the truth-bearing, life-altering, God-given confidence that the “what ifs” promise?

And what if we learn to personalize, internalize, and build our lives upon those promises? What promise can you start with today?
