For Such a Time as This: Discover God’s Purpose for Your Season

Esther seemed like an unlikely person to change history.

She was a young Jewish orphan living in Persia, far from the homeland of her ancestors. After losing both her father and mother, she had been raised by her older cousin Mordecai as his own daughter (Esther 2:7).

Nothing about Esther’s beginnings suggested royalty. Yet behind circumstances she could not understand, God was preparing her for a purpose she could not yet see.

When King Ahasuerus began searching for a new queen, Esther was taken into the king’s palace along with other young women. There, she found favor with Hegai, the man responsible for their care. Eventually, Esther found favor with the king and was crowned queen.

But becoming queen was not the culmination of God’s plan for Esther. It was preparation for it.

The Crisis Comes

A crisis soon arose. Haman, one of the most powerful men in the kingdom, devised a plan to destroy the Jewish people. Suddenly, Esther faced a terrifying decision.

She could remain silent and protect herself, or risk her position and even her life by approaching the king on behalf of her people.

Mordecai sent her a message that has echoed through the centuries:

“And who knows whether you have not come to the kingdom for such a time as this?” (Esther 4:14 ESV).

What if the palace wasn’t simply where Esther happened to be? What if God had positioned her there?

What if the experiences that seemed disconnected were actually preparation?

Esther could not see the entire plan while she was living through it. Neither can we.

There may be circumstances in your life today that you don’t understand. Perhaps you’re wondering why God has allowed you to be where you are, why a door opened or closed, or why a season has lasted longer than you expected.

But God sees what you cannot see.

Paul told the people of Athens that God determined the “allotted periods and the boundaries” of where people would live (Acts 17:26 ESV). You are not living in this generation by accident.

God knew the world you would be born into. He knew the gifts He would place within you, the people whose lives would intersect with yours, the experiences that would shape you, and the opportunities He would place before you.

The question is whether you will recognize your moment when it comes.

Preparation Before Purpose

One of the most important lessons from Esther is that her defining moment didn’t begin when Mordecai said, “for such a time as this.”

God had been preparing her long before that moment arrived.

She learned humility before she wore a crown. She learned to listen before she was called upon to speak. She found favor before she understood why she would need it.

Perhaps God is doing something similar in your life. We often want God to reveal the assignment while He is still working on the preparation. So, don’t despise your season of preparation.

The prayer you’re praying, the lesson you’re learning, the faith you’re developing, and even the difficulty you’re walking through today may be preparing you for an opportunity you cannot yet see.

Recognizing God’s Appointed Times

The story of Esther reminds us that timing matters to God.

Throughout Scripture, God established special times and seasons for His people. Among them were His Feasts, which He called:

“These are the appointed feasts of the LORD that you shall proclaim as holy convocations; they are my appointed feasts” (Leviticus 23:2 ESV).

A holy convocation was a sacred gathering, an appointment God established for His people to set aside ordinary activity and come before Him in worship, remembrance, and consecration.

Passover, Pentecost, and the Feast of Tabernacles were three special pilgrimage Feasts when God’s people were commanded to come before Him.

They were also told:

“They shall not appear before the LORD empty-handed. Every man shall give as he is able, according to the blessing of the LORD your God that he has given you” (Deuteronomy 16:16–17 ESV).

I love the picture contained in those words.

There is a command to come before God with an offering, but there is also a reminder of His provision: “according to the blessing of the LORD your God that he has given you.”

They weren’t giving to persuade God to be good. They were giving because God had already been good.

A Time to Plant and a Time to Harvest

The Feast of Tabernacles came at harvest time, making it a beautiful reminder that God works through seasons. Solomon wrote:

“For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven … a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted” (Ecclesiastes 3:1–2 ESV).

We understand this principle in the natural world, but waiting can be much harder in our spiritual lives. We pray today and want the answer tomorrow. We obey and expect immediate results. We plant and begin looking for fruit before the Seed has had time to grow. But Scripture encourages us:

“And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up” (Galatians 6:9 ESV).

Notice those words: due season. Your responsibility is faithfulness. God’s responsibility is the season.

Esther had to wait for her moment. Then, when the moment came, she had to act.

The same is true for us.

What Is God Asking of You in This Season?

Esther’s story isn’t ultimately a fairy tale about an orphan becoming a queen. It is the story of a woman who realized that God’s favor carried responsibility. Her position wasn’t merely for her comfort, and her influence wasn’t merely for her benefit.

Her blessing became an opportunity to bless others. That is an important question for every follower of Jesus: Why has God placed me where I am?

Perhaps your “such a time as this” won’t involve standing before a king. It may mean sharing Jesus with someone who desperately needs hope. It may mean standing for truth when remaining silent would be easier. It may mean forgiving someone, serving someone, giving generously, praying persistently, or taking a step of obedience you’ve been postponing.

You don’t have to understand everything God is doing before you obey what He has already shown you.

Esther couldn’t see the ending when she made her decision. She simply said:

“I will go to the king, though it is against the law, and if I perish, I perish” (Esther 4:16 ESV).

That is surrendered faith. God, I don’t know what will happen—but I trust You enough to obey.

Today, remember that you can trust an unknown future to an all-knowing God. You are here and you are His. This is your moment to faithfully serve Him. Who knows whether God has been preparing you for such a time as this?
