Are You Being Tormented? Try Forgiveness!

Inspiration MinistriesBy Inspiration Ministries3 Minutes

Are you carrying pain from the past that refuses to let go? Whether it comes from deep wounds or personal failures, that lingering torment can quietly shape your thoughts, relationships, and peace. But God does not intend for you to live bound by what’s behind you—He offers a way forward through forgiveness.

Why Past Pain Still Holds Power

So many people today are being tormented by their past. Whether it’s due to failures and mistakes or ways they’ve been victimized by another person, the torment lingers.

These past traumas are very real—and often painful.

Perhaps you’ve been victimized by an abusive relationship, a fractured home life, or a dishonest partner. If so, God wants to wrap His love and compassion around you today—but He still requires that you forgive the person who wronged you.

If you find yourself in a place of torment today, God wants to release you. But did you know the key to your prison is in your own hand?

Unlocking the Torment that Binds You

Perhaps you’ve been holding on to your hurt for a long time. Someone has hurt you deeply, and you feel justified in holding an angry grudge against them. If so, there is something you need to remember: as severely as you have been wronged, your trauma is no greater than was experienced by many men and women of God in the Bible.

The Hidden Danger of Unforgiveness

Even so, forgiveness is often very difficult. But, it’s an essential key to unlock the torment that has been binding you.

David prayed, “Search me, O God, and know my heart; try me and know my anxious thoughts; and see if there be any hurtful way in me” (Psalm 139:23-24).

Make no mistake about it; unforgiveness is a “hurtful way” that will imprison you with torment unless you deal with it.

Ask God to search your heart. If you’re still talking about the offense months or years after it’s happened, it’s likely that you still have some forgiving to do.

Take time today to allow the Lord to search your heart and remove any “hurtful way” or unforgiveness that is keeping you imprisoned to your past.

What the Bible Says

Remember what Matthew 6:14-15 tells you:

For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forget your sins.

How to Forgive

  • Pray honestly about the hurt
  • Choose forgiveness daily, even when emotions lag
  • Speak blessings instead of rehearsing pain
  • Meditate on Scriptures about God’s forgiveness
