An Immeasurably More Mindset

This article by Caitlynn Scaggs explores what it means to live with an immeasurably more mindset, rooted in Ephesians 3:20. Through Paul’s example—even from a prison cell—we’re reminded that our circumstances or imagination do not limit God. If we surrender our worries and dreams to Him, He promises to exceed them in ways that glorify Him and transform us.

 

“Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us” (Ephesians 3:20 NIV).

Are you dreaming big enough? I ask because in Ephesians 3, the apostle Paul makes it very clear that God is able to do “immeasurably more” than we could ever ask him for. Wow – if that doesn’t make you pause and take stock, I don’t know what will.

What’s more amazing is Paul is claiming this with conviction as he pens this letter from prison. He is so confident in this truth that even his oppressive circumstances could not change the message. May we all seek to be as sure of this truth as Paul!

Let’s consider what it looks like to be certain of God’s desire to do mighty work within us. Although it is an internal experience, it should be one that radiates outwardly; the fruits of how it has taken root in our souls should be apparent.

Like Paul, an “immeasurably more” mindset releases burdens to the Lord because there is blessed assurance that He is at work. It holds loosely to worries and fears because of the certainty that He is up to something – and that something is for our good. It sees past the present afflictions to the glory that comes from a love relationship with the Father through the Son. It embraces the reality that His plans will always be higher, loftier, and more wonderful than those we can come up with.

He Has Plans for You

So how about it, how are your dreams looking these days? Have you allowed the darkness, confusion, and chaos of our times to dim your God-given shine? Remember, He made you intentionally with a plan and purpose for your days. He wants to be at work within you – will you allow it?

Perhaps pairing Ephesians with another commonly quoted verse of Scripture will help bring all the pieces together for how you can embrace an “immeasurably more” mindset: Jeremiah 29:11 (ESV).

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.”

In the context surrounding this Old Testament passage, you find God’s people living in exile, a reality some people may relate to in this pandemic-impacted world. Beyond this oft-quoted verse, in the verses to follow, we are urged to seek the Lord with all our heart and to pray. In doing so, we are reassured we will find Him. This is mirrored in Ephesians 3:20 when it is made clear that the “immeasurably more” is about God’s work in and through us – not for our own glory but for His. Also at the core of God’s desire to do immeasurably more is a desire for our hearts.

Dream Big

Embrace an immeasurably more mindset. Pray and seek God with everything in your being. Remember, He wants a relationship with you, and He wants to work through you to accomplish His magnificent purposes. We often overcomplicate the process and try to overthink what it looks like to be in community with the Father. Don’t. Simply seek Him with all your heart, and keep in community with Him through prayer and a commitment to being in fellowship with His body. Trust that He can transform you and He is in control of the process.

So dream big, beautiful dreams, and share them with the Father. And while you’re doing that, brace yourself for what He will do next. Trust Him; it’ll be immeasurably more than you could have ever imagined.
