Why Is Good Friday Good?: Understanding the Meaning of Good Friday and the Sacrifice of Jesus

David CerulloBy David Cerullo5 Minutes

Every year, Christians around the world observe Good Friday, the day Jesus Christ was crucified.

At first glance, the name can seem confusing. How can the day that commemorates the suffering and death of Jesus be called good? The answer is found in what His sacrifice accomplished.

On Good Friday, we remember that Jesus willingly went to the cross to pay the price for our sins. As John the Baptist declared when he first saw Jesus:

“Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29).

Jesus came as the promised Lamb of God, fulfilling what the Passover lamb had foreshadowed for centuries. Just as the blood of the lamb protected the Israelites during the first Passover, the blood of Jesus brings forgiveness and redemption to all who believe.

Because of Jesus, the cross became more than a symbol of suffering—it became the doorway to salvation.

The Meaning of Good Friday

The events of Good Friday took place during the Jewish Passover celebration. On that day, Jesus was arrested, falsely accused, beaten, and ultimately nailed to a Roman cross. From a human perspective, it appeared to be a moment of defeat.

Yet God was fulfilling His eternal plan of redemption.

Centuries before the crucifixion, the prophet Isaiah foretold what the Messiah would endure:

“He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement for our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed” (Isaiah 53:5).

Jesus took upon Himself the punishment that belonged to us. On the cross, He bore the weight of the world’s sin so that we could be reconciled to God.

This is why Christians call the day Good Friday. What seemed like tragedy became the greatest act of love the world has ever known.

The Finished Work of the Cross

When Jesus hung on the cross, He spoke three powerful words: “It is finished” (John 19:30).

These words declared that the work of redemption had been completed. The price for sin had been paid in full. Nothing more needed to be added. Through His death, Jesus made a way for every person to experience forgiveness, freedom from sin, and peace with God.

Yet many people struggle to believe that such complete forgiveness is truly possible. It can be difficult to release the guilt of past mistakes, failures, or habits that seem impossible to overcome.

But the message of Good Friday reminds us that forgiveness does not depend on our ability to earn it. It depends on what Jesus has already done.

Because of His sacrifice, our sins can be washed away. Because of His grace, our past no longer defines our future.

Receiving the Gift of Forgiveness

The Bible tells us that Jesus took upon Himself the sins of the entire world—your sins and mine.

Through His sacrifice, He opened the door for every person to be restored to a right relationship with God. All we must do is receive what He has already accomplished.

Good Friday reminds us that the cross was not the end of the story. Three days later, Jesus rose from the grave, proving His victory over sin and death.

Because of Jesus:

  • Forgiveness is available.
  • Freedom from sin is possible.
  • Peace with God can become your reality.

That is why Good Friday is truly good.

Today, take a moment to reflect on the sacrifice Jesus made for you. Thank Him for His love, receive His forgiveness, and remember the incredible hope we have because of the cross.

God bless you,
