Among Jesus’ disciples, Philip never seems to get much attention. Yet he clearly played an important role, and was special to Jesus. In fact, Philip was the first person actually recruited by Jesus Himself. Then, when Nathanael had doubts about Jesus, Philip told him to “Come and see” for himself.

When a large crowd followed Jesus to a remote place, it was Philip whom Jesus asked, “Where are we to buy bread, so that these may eat?” He asked this question because Jesus was testing Philip, “for He Himself knew what He was intending to do” (John 6:1-14).

It was to Philip that some Greeks turned when they wanted to see Jesus. They knew that Philip would point them to Jesus (John 12:20-22).

The last time we see Philip in John’s Gospel was on the night Jesus was betrayed. As He was teaching, the other disciples sat passively, but Philip could not be silent, asking, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” It was his response that opened the door to the deep truths Jesus revealed that night (John 14:1-14).

We learn many important lessons from the Philip’s life. He brought a combination of attitudes and characteristics that Jesus valued. While others may have received more attention, Philip had a special role. He was willing to ask tough questions and step out when others might have been timid. He was a man whom others knew would bring them to Jesus.

How important to remember that each of us has special assignments in serving God. In your life, be ready to follow Jesus wherever He leads, always being a witness. Always be ready to be faithful to your special calling.
