“I love the Lord, because He hears my voice. . .The cords of death encompassed me. . .I found distress and sorrow. Then I called upon the name of the Lord. . .I was brought low, and He saved me. . .I shall walk before the Lord in the land of the living. . .What shall I render to the Lord for all His benefits toward me?. . .I shall offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving. . .I shall pay my vows to the Lord.” Psalm 116:1-18 NASB

The Passover was a feast commemorated by God, designed to help His people remember the miraculous way He delivered them from bondage in Egypt (Exodus 13:8-10).

One way they remembered was by reading the “Passover Psalms,” which included Psalm 116. This was a reminder of the desperate needs they have faced over time. But even when “the cords of death encompassed” them, God was with them. Even when filled with “distress and sorrow,” they could call on Him. Even when they were “brought low,” He saved them.

Reminded of His compassion and blessings, the psalmist knew that he needed to respond! His people needed to remember His help but also to thank Him.

But they also needed to pay their vows, and keep their promises. Continually to walk with Him. To obey His Word. To seek to please and serve Him. To look for ways to show Him how much we love Him. To give sacrificially to Him, as an expression of worship, appreciation, and gratitude.

In your life, how are you responding to God’s blessings to you? Just think about all that He has done for you! But don’t take these blessings for granted. Show how much you love Him by responding with a grateful heart. With offerings of your time, talent, and treasure. With a commitment to seek first His Kingdom.

Prayer: Father, I love You, Lord! Thank You for hearing me when I cry. Thank You for being gracious and compassionate. I am Your servant. Help me to keep my promises. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
