Your Light

David Josiah Brewer spent much of his life in a world filled with controversy. He was born in 1837 in an area today that is part of Turkey. His parents were missionaries but he grew up in America. After a distinguished career as a lawyer and judge, he was appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court in 1889, where he served until his death in 1910.

A strong believer, he knew that some had argued that Christians should not be political active. Brewer rejected this argument. He once wrote, “There is no incompatibility between Christianity and patriotism.” In fact, he commented that Christians have a responsibility to be involved in politics, business, education, and every other aspect of modern life. He reminded believers that Jesus called us to let our light shine (Matthew 5:16).

In his eulogy at Brewer’s funeral, U.S. Attorney General George Wickersham quoted from Deuteronomy, commenting that Brewer’s life had been “one of service.” Brewer put his Christian faith into practice, and was open about his faith. He looked for ways to serve people of all backgrounds. He dedicated his life to preserving freedom and a Biblical basis for law.

Today, the world needs men and women like David Brewer who are committed to God’s Word and to truth. The world needs men and women who seek to serve others, will not compromise, are willing to let their light shine, and aren’t ashamed about their belief in the Gospel.

Ask God to help you be a person of integrity, standing firmly on the principles in His Word. Be willing to speak out, as His Spirit leads you. Seek to serve others and show His love toward everyone.
