Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus

Helen Lemmel was born in England in 1863, but her family moved to the United States in 1875. While she was just a young girl, it became clear that she was a talented singer, and she spent years giving concert tours in the U.S.

Eventually Helen became a vocal music teacher at Moody Bible Institute. She also wrote hymns that told of her faith.

When she was 59 years old, Helen read a Gospel tract that contained a sentence that struck a chord with her: “So then, turn your eyes upon Him, look full into His face and you will find that the things of earth will acquire a strange new dimness.”

Helen developed this phrase into a hymn that reminded her of the importance of looking to Jesus. Perhaps thinking about her own life, she wrote, “O soul, are you weary and troubled? No light in the darkness you see? There’s a light for a look at the Savior, and life more abundant and free!”

She described how Jesus provided forgiveness and that sin had no dominion over Him. She declared that, through Jesus, we are more than conquerors.

The message of this hymn still is true today—and it is true for you.

Are you facing daunting problems? Is your life filled with turmoil and stress? Are you worried about your family, finances, or future?

No matter what is going on in your life today, you can follow Helen Lemmel’s advice in this great hymn: “Turn your eyes upon Jesus, look full in His wonderful face, and the things of earth will grow strangely dim, in the light of His glory and grace.” Look to Jesus, and your life will be transformed!
