Your Assignments

From the beginning of creation, God made clear to Adam and Eve that He did not want them to live passive lives. He created the world and provided a beautiful place for them to live filled with wonderful things. Then He gave them resources and assignments. He expected them to use the talents He had given them, and provided them with opportunities.

Specifically, He told Adam that he was to “tend and keep” the garden where he was placed. He was to be an active worker, taking care of that garden.

The Bible makes clear that same pattern applies of us. For God has given each person specific assignments, and specific resources. He will put us in specific place where we can live and work, and employ those resources, and “tend and keep” the things He has given us.

Remember that these principles apply to you. God does not want you to just to be an observer but to use the gifts He has given you. As Jesus demonstrated in the parables of the talents (Matthew 25:14-30), God rewards those who are good stewards and invest the resources they have been given. But He is displeased with those who bury their talents. This means we are to put our time, talent, and treasure to work to advance His kingdom.

This is an important perspective particularly for today, designated as “Labor Day” in the U.S., This is a day to remember the importance of being thankful for all God has given you, and then using these resources God. Be sensitive to the opportunities He provides. Ask God to help you be a good steward, serving Him with your whole being. Seek to apply the resources and gifts He has given you in everything you do.
