Witnessing for Christ

In the fourth century, young Frumentius was taken by his uncle for a sea voyage. After leaving their home in Tyre, in modern-day Lebanon, their ship stopped at a harbor on the Red Sea. There, the ship was attacked, and the only survivors were Frumentius and his brother. The two boys were taken as slaves to Ezana, the King of Axum, in modern Ethiopia.

It would have been easy for these boys to disappear into obscurity. But Frumentius became a bold witness, impacting people throughout Ethiopia with his Christian faith. Because of his testimony, Ezana and many others gave their lives to Christ.

After the king’s death, the brothers were given their freedom. But Frumentius stayed in Ethiopia at the queen’s request, helping educate her young son and oversee the kingdom.

Frumentius rose to the position of the first bishop of Axum. He is credited with the first Ethiopian translation of the New Testament. Perhaps most importantly, he used his influence to spread Christianity, encouraging Christians to be open about their faith.

Frumentius could have become discouraged and given up hope when he was taken into slavery. Instead, he continued to serve God and live for Christ. As a result, he helped change his country and the world.

Today, remember that God can use you in any situation. Seek to serve Him. Look for opportunities to share the Gospel. Like Frumentius, your life can have a significant impact!
