Why Solomon Was Successful

We might take it for granted that Solomon would become a successful ruler. He seemed to have every advantage. When he became king, the nation was at peace. Its borders were secure. His reputation for great wisdom attracted admiration from people throughout the region. And he had no significant rivals for power.

But, when we look at his successors, we realize that this success was not inevitable. Indeed, after his death, the northern tribes revolted, and the nation was separated into the kingdoms of Israel and Judah. Both nations were plagued by a perpetual series of problems. And, neither ever came close to equaling the magnificence of Solomon’s kingdom.

In short, Solomon’s success was the exception, rather than the norm. So why was he successful? The Bible says that the reason was that God “was with him and made him exceedingly great.” He could not point to his skills as an administrator, his wisdom and knowledge, or the political or military power he controlled. He owed everything to God.

When we think about our successes and failures, we can focus on our own individual talents or gifts, the resources we have accumulated, our decisions, or our accomplishments. But the truth is that none of these really matter compared to what God has done for us.

All of us need to learn this lesson, and realize that we owe everything to God. If we depend on Him, He can give us a firm foundation for every part of our lives. He will grant us favor, bless our activities, and give us success in our families, job, relationships, and resources.

Today, trust your life to God, and invest your time, talent, and resources in His Kingdom. Then, look to Him for success.
