When We Look to the Lamb

In a season meant for remembering, When We Look to the Lamb invites us to stop carrying what Jesus already bore and rest in the forgiveness His sacrifice secured.

“The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, ‘Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!’” (John 1:29).

As John proclaimed, Jesus was “the Lamb of God.” The lamb was an important symbol for God’s people. God Himself (Exodus 12:3–20) had instituted the Passover, in which every family was to take a lamb “without blemish, a male” and offer it as a sacrifice once a year. In Egypt, the blood of this lamb protected the family: “When I see the blood, I will pass over you, and no plague will befall you to destroy you, when I strike the land of Egypt.”

In God’s eternal plan, Jesus had come to earth to become the sacrificial Lamb that God Himself was offering to atone for the sins of the whole world. Jesus perfectly fulfilled this role during Passover the night before He was crucified. No sin ever has been committed that was not covered by His sacrificial death on the cross.

Yet so often we hold onto sin. It can be hard to imagine that we could ever be forgiven or set free. But we need to look at Jesus and realize that He is the Lamb of God who already took away our sin. On Calvary, the sacrifice was made. We can accept and receive what has already been done.

During this holy time of year, do not keep holding on to sin. Jesus died so that you can be forgiven and free. Believe in Him, and accept His finished work today!
