When Grace Finds the Unlikely

When grace finds the unlikely, as seen in Zacchaeus’ story, it shows how Jesus pursues those whom others reject and brings real transformation to willing hearts.

“The Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost” (Luke 19:10).

Many people were puzzled. Why would Jesus want to stay at the home of Zacchaeus or have a meal with this chief tax collector?

Zacchaeus was rich, and like all tax collectors, he was hated by most people. It was common knowledge that these men took advantage of their position for their own personal gain. They were seen as agents of Rome – the enemy and oppressor.

But Zacchaeus demonstrated eagerness to see Jesus as He passed through Jericho. Small in stature, he had climbed up into a sycamore tree just to see Him. When Jesus saw this intense interest, He called out, “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down, for I must stay at your house today” (v. 5). Others grumbled that Jesus had “gone in to be the guest of a man who is a sinner” (v. 7). But Jesus had come to bring salvation and open the doors to the Kingdom of Heaven.

After spending time with Jesus, Zacchaeus’ life changed forever. Instead of stealing, he gave to the poor … even repaying four times as much to anyone he had defrauded. At the end of His visit, Jesus said, “Today salvation has come to this house” (v. 9).

Jesus came “to seek and to save the lost.” Today, you are called to continue this ministry – reaching souls for Christ on every continent, in every major language, through every form of technology. Make this your goal and passion.
