When Following Jesus Requires Everything

“When Following Jesus Requires Everything” reveals the cost of true discipleship, calling us to surrender fully and trust God to do what seems impossible.

“‘How difficult it will be for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!’ And the disciples were amazed … ‘With man it is impossible, but not with God. For all things are possible with God’” (Mark 10:23–27).

A man walked away sad after Jesus told him he needed to “go, sell all that you have and give to the poor,” saying this was the key to having “treasure in heaven” (v. 21). Then he must come and follow Jesus. Walking away, the man proved that he loved things more than God.

As the man left, Jesus told His disciples, “How difficult it will be for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!” The disciples were amazed. Perhaps, as never before, they realized the kind of commitment Jesus was requiring.

Jesus told them further, “How difficult it is to enter the kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God” (vs. 24–25).

Jesus’ comments caused His disciples to react with even more astonishment. His requirement seemed impossible, and they responded, “Then who can be saved?” (v. 26). Jesus assured them, “With man it is impossible, but not with God. For all things are possible with God.”

Peter told Him, “We have left everything and followed you” (v. 28). Jesus knew the sacrifices they had made, and He promised great rewards for those who made this level of commitment—even “a hundredfold now … and in the age to come eternal life” (v. 30).

Receive God’s salvation. Seek His Kingdom, and gain eternal rewards!
