What Do You Want

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

“A man … had been ill for thirty-eight years … ‘Do you wish to get well?’ The sick man answered Him, ‘Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool’ […] ‘Get up, pick up your pallet and walk.’ Immediately the man became well.”—John 5:5–9 NASB

One day, Jesus confronted a man who had been ill for 38 years. In a sense, this man must have believed God could heal him, for he continued to wait and believe. Yet at the same time, he seemed content with his infirmity. He just kept waiting. Finally, he came face-to-face with Jesus, who asked him a simple question: “Do you wish to get well?”

The word here translated well implies being completely whole; sound in body, soul, and spirit. It can include mental and emotional health and physical and spiritual health.

This man symbolizes people who have needs but in one way or another, have become content with their conditions. They don’t believe change is possible. They have given up hope. They aren’t sure what to think.

What would you do today if you heard Jesus ask you, “Do you want to get well?” Do you really believe He can solve your problems? Ask yourself if you are content to live with the problems you face. Do you really believe He can intervene in your life and change your circumstances?

The example of this sick man is a reminder that Jesus is ready to hear you and help you, right now. He is standing by your side, ready to heal and deliver, protect and provide. Tell Him what you need. Don’t doubt, but have faith. With Him, all things are possible.
