We Don’t Understand

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

“Now when I had delivered the purchase deed to Baruch the son of Neriah, I prayed …  ‘Ah, LORD God! Behold, You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and outstretched arm. There is nothing too hard for You.’” – Jeremiah 32:16-17 NKJV

Jeremiah could not understand what God called him to do. He knew that nothing was too hard for God. He is “great in counsel and mighty in work” (v. 19). But God asked him to buy a field at a time when the city had been given to the Chaldeans (v. 24). This made no sense to Jeremiah. Why would God do this?

God’s answer confirmed the theme of Jerimiah’s prayer. Nothing is too hard for Him. He had not made a mistake but allowed events to unfold in a specific way. He had a plan that Jeremiah could not understand. By buying the land in Judah, he was given a sign of God’s continuing love and long-range designs. God had not abandoned His people!

How often we can react just like Jeremiah. We’re surprised by the way our lives unfold, going through situations that don’t make sense, puzzled by God’s directions, and having doubts and questions.

At times like these, like Jeremiah, we can be honest with God. But in every circumstance, we need to remember that He is Almighty God. We can trust Him.

Commit your way to Him. Let Him direct your steps. If you are uncertain or have doubts, be honest and ask Him your questions. But remember the importance of obedience. He can do all things. Demonstrate your faith by trusting Him and obeying Him.
