We Bear God’s Name

Because we bear God’s name, our lives should reflect His holiness, showing the world His unchanging truth, love, and faithfulness.

“I acted for the sake of My name, that it would not be defiled in the sight of the nations among whom they lived, in whose sight I made Myself known to them by bringing them out of the land of Egypt.”—Ezekiel 20:9 NASB

How easily we can think of God as just another person. But the Bible makes it clear that He is God Almighty, the Creator of the universe, sovereign over all the earth. Although our lives may be subject to corruption, weakness, and sin, He is perfect and holy.

As God is holy—set apart and different—so those who represent Him must be different. When He called Israel to be His people, He told them they needed to be set apart, holy, distinct, and different. Yet they became corrupted by the world.

While God corrected the Israelites as a loving Father, He also acted for the sake of His name. Even though Israel failed to remain true to the Lord, His Word remained true, and He always kept His promises.

These same principles are true today. God wants us to realize that we are His representatives. We, too, must be concerned about the honor of His name and reputation.

Instead of only being concerned about ourselves, we—His people, His representatives, and His witnesses—must remember that everything we do points to God. We’re His chosen vessels to transmit His love and power to this generation.

Remember that you are to “be holy,” for God Himself is holy (1 Peter 1:16). Think about His holiness as you make decisions about your life and resources. Seek to live a life that reflects that holiness. Dedicate yourself to serving Him.
