Wages That Will Last

Imagine a person who works hard and earns a decent wage. Then imagine that this person stores these wages in a “purse” filled with holes. As a result, everything that had been gained is lost; all of the work that was done is for naught.

Haggai provided this powerful picture in the middle of a passage that focused on putting God first. The specific example was building God’s house before we build our own.

This principle can apply to every area of our lives. In fact, this is a key to receiving God’s blessings.

Jesus made this clear when He taught that God knows all our needs, and if we seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, all these things will be added” (Matthew 6:32-33).

The Bible also consistently teaches the principle of tithing. This means giving God the first fruits of our labor (Exodus 23:19). If we faithfully give to God, He promises to bless our activities.

Yet many people go through life with “holes in their pockets,” letting everything slip away. They work hard, yet never seem to get ahead. They’re always frustrated, always falling short. However, when God has first place, He can plug the leaks, make our lives more effective, and give us a testimony of fruitfulness.

Today, remember that God wants you to Harvest much! Make sure He has first place. Seek first His Kingdom. Sow into Good Ground with the resources He has given you.
