Vanishing Mist

Have you ever felt like life is rushing past faster than you can hold onto it? James calls our days a mist—and shows us where to fix our eyes instead.

“Yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes” (James 4:14).

John Bunyan found himself in jail—arrested for preaching the Gospel. It was 1660, and he was told that if he would apologize and stop preaching, he would be released. But he said he could not stop proclaiming what Jesus had done for him. The result was 12 years in prison.

Bunyan’s time was not wasted, however. While imprisoned, he wrote several enduringly important books, including The Pilgrim’s Progress, an allegory based on his own spiritual journey.

Another book was entitled, Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners. Bunyan observed how people could waste their lives striving after pleasures and rewards that wouldn’t last, worrying about problems that were only temporary.

He saw how an eternal perspective transforms us, reminding us how short this life truly is. By trusting God, we gain a hopeful future with nothing to fear. As John Bunyan concluded, this life is a mere slumber compared to eternity, and the Bible mirrors this, calling our existence a temporary mist. Everything changes when we shift our focus from worldly distractions to our eternal destiny.

Ask God to give you His eternal perspective. Focus on the things that will last.

Reflection Question: What temporary things of this world are distracting you today?

Frequently Asked Questions

What does it mean to live with an “eternal perspective”?

It means measuring today’s decisions against what lasts forever, not just what feels urgent. Practically, it means asking whether a worry, goal, or grudge will matter in eternity before giving it your energy.

Is it wrong to plan for the future if life is “just a mist”?

No—Scripture calls this life brief, not meaningless. James 4:13–15 corrects presumption (“we will go … and do business”), not planning itself; the antidote is holding plans loosely and trusting God with the outcome.

How can I keep an eternal perspective when life feels overwhelming?

Start by naming one worry you’re carrying and asking God to show you how it looks from eternity’s vantage point. Scripture and prayer both work to recalibrate a short-term view into a long-term one.
