An Unshakeable Foundation

When John Quincy Adams was sworn in as President of the United States on March 4, 1825, he knew that the young nation faced serious problems. There were strong opinions and bitter divisions that eventually would lead to a Civil War. Adams himself had been elected under a cloud of controversy. Another candidate, Andrew Jackson, had actually received more votes, and the election was finally decided in the House of Representatives.

As he took the oath of office, Adams presented his thoughts about the key issues the country faced. Because of his strong Christian faith, he knew that the only real hope came from God. Quoting Psalm 127 (KJV), he said that “except the Lord keep the city the watchman waketh but in vain.” Their only hope was to seek God fervently for His favor.

Today, massive problems confront every country. Wars loom on the horizon…there are constant threats from terrorists…and serious environmental issues abound. Poverty, crime, and disease seem unstoppable.

What is the answer to these situations? Politicians and economists may propose solutions, but the advice John Quincy Adams offered remains true: Our only hope is to turn to God. Unless He is guiding us, there will be no lasting solutions.

Today, commit yourself to seeking God as the foundation of whatever you do. Seek His wisdom, and ask Him to direct your steps. Base your life on His Word, and refuse to compromise with the world or follow its ways. Pray for the leaders of your country to turn to God for help. Lastly, pray for revival—that God’s Spirit would move throughout the world in a powerful way.
