Unmet Needs

What does it take for new products and services to become successful? This is a major challenge! In fact, it has been reported that more than 175,000 new brands were introduced in the U.S. alone between 1978 and 2013. Of these, only a small number survive. And an even smaller number thrive.

What makes the difference? In the face of countless competitors, why do some companies and products succeed while the majority fail?

Intrigued by these questions, a major research company recently conducted an exhaustive study of thousands of brands over several years. The clear conclusion was that the most important factor in long-term success has been “meeting unmet needs.” This means providing products and services that people really needed and used. Successful items are ones that solve problems and improve people’s lives.

The second most important factor has been a total commitment throughout the company. This means company teamwork characterized by total agreement and total focus.

These two ingredients seem so logical and simple. Yet they are comparatively rare.

As we think about our Christian lives, we realize that these factors apply to us as well. What does it take for us to impact the world—to stand out when there are so many competing beliefs and lifestyles? How can we reach people who don’t recognize their need for the Gospel?

We see the principle of addressing people’s needs when Peter and John encountered a man who had been lame his whole life. His need? To walk. Peter demonstrated that God’s power was available to meet his need.

Today, remember that people all around you have problems, whether big or small. Ask the Lord to help you demonstrate His power to change lives and meet needs that cannot be met any other way. Whether the need is financial or emotional, in someone’s health or a relationship, God has the answer!
