Uncompromising Truth

Even though Niccolò Machiavelli was born more than 500 years ago (in fact, on this date in 1469), his influence still is felt everywhere. In art and music. Business and politics. Sports and even the church. Many suggest that we live in a “Machiavellian world.” Where, to be successful, a person needs to be “Machiavellian.” Even those who have never read a word of his writings may be under his influence.

Machiavelli gained fame most notably through The Prince, which became a favorite book of men such as Napoleon, Hitler, and Louis XIV (who said it was his “favorite nightcap”). For centuries, his writings have been studied in schools worldwide.

One recent book, aiming to teach people how to succeed in business, urged readers to “do what Machiavelli would do.” What does this mean? That we should do whatever it takes to get what we want. That nothing is absolutely “true.” That we should treat the concept of truth as “your servant, not your master.” That some things may be true for some people but not others. That we should be willing to “lie, when it was necessary.”

This philosophy may be popular with some, but it directly violates the Bible. Yes, God clearly reveals that there is Truth. An absolute Truth. God founded the world based on His eternal wisdom. His knowledge and principles are part of the very foundation of creation.

Today, if you follow the ways of the world, you may be tempted to bend or ignore the Truth. To do whatever is necessary to get what you want, no matter what it costs. But, if you want to please God, make sure that you live by His eternal standards. By His Truth, which never changes. By His principles, which will guide you in every situation.
