Uncompromising Truth

Inspiration MinistriesBy Inspiration Ministries2 Minutes

Even though Niccolò Machiavelli was born more than 500 years ago (on this date in 1469), his influence still is felt everywhere…in art, music, business, sports, and politics. Even in the church, we still see his impact. Many suggest that we live in a “Machiavellian world,” where people must be “Machiavellian” in order to succeed. Even those who have never read a word of his writings may be under his influence.

Machiavelli gained fame most notably through The Prince, which became a favorite book of men such as Napoleon, Hitler, and King Louis XIV (who said it was his “favorite nightcap”). His writings are studied in colleges and universities worldwide.

One recent book, aiming to teach people how to succeed in business, urged us to “do what Machiavelli would do.” What does this mean? The core of Machiavelli’s philosophy was that we should do whatever it takes to get what we want.

Machiavelli taught that we should treat the concept of truth as “our servant, not our master.” He urged that, in order to succeed, we should be willing to “lie, when it is necessary.”
Although this philosophy may be popular with some, it directly violates the teachings of the Bible. There is truth—and it’s an absolute truth. God founded the world based on His eternal wisdom. His principles are part of the very foundation of creation.

Today, if you follow the ways of the world, you may be tempted to bend or ignore the truth…to do whatever is necessary to get what you want, no matter the cost. If you desire to please God, make sure to live by His eternal standards. Remember: His truth never changes, and His principles will guide you in every situation.
