Turned Around by Light

The Bible tells us about a powerful weapon that can change our lives. It is light.

It was no accident that on the first day of creation, God said, “Let there be light” (Genesis 1:3). For light was fundamental for creation. And it was no accident that Jesus said, “I am the Light of the world” (John 8:12).

Light is an agent of revelation. Darkness hides and obscures, and it makes it difficult for us to see. But light reveals everything. And the brighter the light, the more we see.

Light can expose every detail about our lives. Even our deepest secrets. Even things we would prefer to remain hidden.

First, Paul said we are to be proactive in our attitude toward darkness. This means striving to avoid sin in any form…anything that is questionable…or anything that is influenced by Satan and the forces of darkness.

Then we are to “put on the armor of light.” Light acts as a shield, protecting us and helping us avoid sin and things that are inappropriate.

Walking in the light also is a powerful way to increase the strength and unity of the Body of Christ. The Bible tells us that “if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another” (1 John 1:7).

As each of us seeks the light, we can live with transparency and openness, without fear. Instead of being hypocrites and hiding our flaws, we can be honest with others. The light within us becomes more powerful and bright, and we truly can become “the light of the world” (Matthew 5:14).

Today, ask God to help you “lay aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light.” Seek to walk in the light, that you might shine the light brightly in your world.
