Turmoil

When turmoil takes over, it may be a sign we’ve strayed from God’s order—He calls us back to peace through trust and obedience.

“’Because you have more turmoil than the nations that surround you and have not walked in My statutes” … therefore, this is what the LORD God says: ‘Behold, I, even I, am against you, and I will execute judgments among you.’”—Ezekiel 5:7–8 NASB

God was ready to send judgment. His people had rejected Him and failed to obey Him. But He also said judgment was coming because they had “more turmoil than the nations that surround you.” Why would God judge them for having more turmoil?

The Hebrew word translated turmoil comes from a root word implying a great commotion, clamoring, uproar, and tumult.

This is the opposite of God’s desire for order. He brought order to an earth that was “formless and desolate emptiness” (Genesis 1:2). He commanded us to “seek peace and pursue it” (1 Peter 3:11). And He desires that all things in the church “be done properly and in an orderly way” (1 Corinthians 14:40).

Peace comes to those who trust completely in God and live according to His Word. Too often, we forget these simple truths and are quick to complain and worry, or go our own way. This leads to a life filled with disorder.

God desires that we obey His Word and trust Him, knowing He will fill our lives with joy and peace, fulfillment and contentment.

Is there turmoil in your life? Have you allowed the world to shake your peace? Have you become unsettled?

Remember that God has given you His Spirit. Commit your life to Him and surrender anew to the lordship of Jesus. Live according to His Word. Allow Him to fill you with peace.
