Traps from Enemies

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

When faced with traps from enemies, Jesus responded with wisdom and grace—showing us how to rely on the Spirit instead of reacting in fear or judgment.

“They were saying this to test Him, so that they might have grounds for accusing Him.”—John 8:6 NASB

People gathered in the Temple to hear Jesus—men and women, old and young. He welcomed all who listened. But this openness and compassion irritated the scribes and Pharisees.

They set before Him a woman caught in adultery and asked if they should stone her. With hearts full of deception, they must have been proud of their crafty scheme, sure that they’d trapped Jesus.

But drawing on wisdom these men knew nothing about, Jesus changed the entire confrontation. First, He stooped down and wrote on the ground. Then, when the accusers “persisted in asking Him,” He challenged them, “He who is without sin among you, let him be the first to throw a stone at her” (v. 7).

Suddenly, these men were on trial. What were their motives? The conditions of their hearts? One by one, they left, until Jesus was alone with the woman. His motivation toward her was not judgment but forgiveness—to give the woman a fresh start.

Jesus gave us a model for responding to the traps and attacks of the enemy. Filled with His Word and guided by His Spirit, we also must be ready to recognize and respond to these traps.

Ask God to give you discernment and help you be prepared. Remember that God is greater than any accuser you might face. His Holy Spirit is with you. Trust Him to show you what to say and do.

Reflection Question: How can I respond wisely when others try to trap or accuse me?

Prayer
Lord God, help me to be alert to the enemy’s traps. Make me strong in Your Spirit, and show me how to respond. In Jesus’ name, amen.
