Who’s preparing you for the battles you didn’t see coming? David praised the Lord who “trains my hands for war”—the God who equips those He calls.

“Blessed be the Lord, my rock, who trains my hands for war, and my fingers for battle” (Psalm 144:1).

David knew how to fight. Even as a youth, he was called “a man of valor, a man of war” (1 Samuel 16:18).

David could do these things because he had been trained by God Himself. He was confident because God was his “steadfast love.” He could succeed because God was his “fortress,” “stronghold,” “deliverer,” and “shield.” He could “take refuge” in Him (v. 2).

There were times when he might feel afraid or uncertain, but whenever this happened, he turned to God for protection and comfort, rest and reassurance. He knew that God would bring him success.

David realized that he did not deserve these blessings. Like all men, he was “like a breath,” his days “like a passing shadow” (v. 4). But he was grateful for all God had done, and he knew the importance of praising Him for past triumphs and singing His praise because He “rescues David his servant” (vs. 9–10).

David also knew that future generations would need this same kind of training, as did his entire nation, for “blessed are the people whose God is the Lord!” (v. 15)

Like David, humble yourself before God. Learn to depend on Him. Cooperate with Him, and let Him train you. Commit your battles to Him, confident that He will guide you to victory. Obey Him in every skirmish, every battle, every fight against every foe. Praise and thank Him for giving you the victory!
