Ready to Do God’s Will

Although he was a successful lawyer, Abraham Lincoln often was depressed about his life and career. Lacking conviction, his speeches failed to move his listeners. His law partner reported that he often would fall into “a sad terribly gloomy state,” sitting silently and staring for hours. Born on this date in 1809, Lincoln seemed to be a failure.

However, everything began to change when Lincoln ran for the U.S. Senate in 1858. Although his campaign was unsuccessful, his speeches stirred audiences, sparking interest that led to his election as President in 1860.

What made the difference? The time was right. He was ready, having been prepared for that moment.

The Bible tells us that timing is important for God. There is a right time for everything, and “God has made everything beautiful for its own time” (Ecclesiastes 3:11).

Many people say they want to do God’s will but, as the Lord told Ezekiel, often these people just “invent their own prophecies.” God is looking for people who will wait on Him, ready to speak only His words, sensitive to His prescribed timing.

If you want to be used by God, seek to fit in with His timing. Be willing to wait, if necessary. Be careful not to “invent” your own messages, claiming that they came from God.

Today, be sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit. Be ready to do God’s will, in His time, and in His way. Don’t depend on your flesh or the reactions of other people. Trust in Him to guide you as you wait on Him.
