Timeless Truths

“Since we consider and look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen; for the things that are visible are temporal (brief and fleeting), but the things that are invisible are deathless and everlasting.” 2 Corinthians 4:18 Amplified Bible

A gold rush in 1902 brought thousands of people to Goldfield, New Mexico. The population of this desert town rose to 40,000 by 1910. But, when the mining boom ended, people left in droves and Goldfield became one of the many ghost towns scattered throughout the United States.

To the people of Goldfield in 1910, their city must have seemed immune to any possible downturn. But, when the gold ran out, everything changed, and they realized just how fleeting the things of this world can be.

We see these same patterns in countless situations in the world around us. Overnight, the things that are successful can become failures. The fads of today become the follies of tomorrow. And boom towns can become ghost towns.

How often do we make our plans, assuming that things as we know them will last forever? We need to realize that inevitably things will change. Our ideas, plans, commitments, and resources can be like ghost towns, thriving one minute, but empty the next.

Paul told the Corinthians that the key to spiritual maturity is looking at the things which are invisible. These are the spiritual things in life, and the things of God’s Kingdom. All the material things that we can see may appear valuable and attractive, but their pleasures and value are temporary, brief, and fleeting.

Today, do not place your trust in the things of this world, but in the timeless truths of God and His Word. The stock market may go up and down. Corporations and nations may rise and fall. But God’s Word abides forever. Seek first His Kingdom. You can trust in Him!

Prayer: Father, help me not to depend on the material things of this world. Help me to fill my life with truths from Your timeless Word. I trust in You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
