Things of the Earth

Like most people, you probably spend much time thinking about your needs, wants, feelings, and interests – problems you encounter, your friends and family, what pleases you, world events of special interest to you, and issues that impact your life.

These patterns are true regardless of our spiritual condition. Christians have human feelings and concerns. Even the most mature believers have interests and hobbies. It seems impossible to avoid hearing the latest rumors and trends. We are all intrigued by entertainment options.

At times, we might feel like helpless victims, unable to resist the pressures exerted on us by outside forces. But the Bible reminds us that we have choices about our decisions, what we focus on, and what we allow into our minds.

God can give us discernment and help us make the right choices. If we feel powerless, the Bible reminds us that the Spirit can give us the self-control we need (Galatians 5:23). We still may need to make tough decisions and “kill everything in you that belongs only to earthly life.”

A practical way to develop the right habits is by filling our minds with God’s Word. Read, study, and think about it. Resist thoughts that point us in the wrong direction. Pray and ask God for His help. Seek to be sensitive to the Spirit.

Make it a priority to spend time with God. Meditate on His Word. Think about heavenly things.
