The Source of Wisdom

Moses Maimonides had one of the greatest minds in history. Born on this day in 1138 in Spain, he is one of only 23 people honored with marble relief portraits over the gallery doors in the U.S. House of Representatives chamber in Washington, D.C.

His skills were extraordinary. He mastered philosophy, science, mathematics, astronomy, and logic, and was a devout student of the Old Testament. As a physician, he wrote medical works that were studied for centuries. His writings about Jewish law became a standard with widespread influence.

Maimonides had such impact in part because he recognized that God was the source of reason. He realized the wonder that can be learned from studying His creation. As we become more sensitive to His presence, we develop a “passionate love of God.” And our minds are opened to see more of His truths.

His incredible wisdom helped him gain respect throughout the world, even admired by Muslims. He found great inspiration in the life of Moses, his namesake from the Bible. As a biographer explained, Maimonides “summoned the people of Israel to relive the biblical age, when they mastered the sciences and philosophy.” To realize that they were God’s people and could call on Him for great wisdom in every endeavor.

Because God was the Creator, Maimonides believed that there was no conflict between science and faith. In fact, he saw God’s imprint everywhere.

In many ways, Maimonides followed in the footsteps of Solomon, who realized that seeking God was the key to success. And because he asked for wisdom, God blessed him abundantly in every other way (2 Chronicles 1:11-12).

He knew the truth that “fear of the Lord is the foundation of true wisdom.” And that “the heavens declare the glory of God” (Psalm 19:1).

Seek His wisdom for everything you do. Let Him guide you. Teach you. Inspire you.
