The Signs of the Times

On the surface, it seems that these Pharisees and Sadducees made a reasonable request. They just wanted a sign. But their innocent appearance masked darker objectives.

Jesus was not fooled; He knew they just were “testing” Him, trying to trick Him into giving an answer that they could use against Him. He pointed out that they knew how to recognize weather trends, but the real issue was that they were spiritually blind. Though they were religious leaders, they had no spiritual discernment.

Because they were evil and faithless, they only were given “the sign of Jonah” (referring to Jesus’ death and Resurrection). In other words, if they didn’t accept this sign, they would not be given anything further.

People all around us want to know the future. God has given us His Spirit and His Word. Yet to receive the right understanding, we must not be hypocrites, like those Pharisees and Sadducees.

Do you want to understand the signs of the times? Begin by making a total commitment to follow Jesus. Spend time in worship and praise. Cultivate an intimate relationship with God. Seek to grow spiritually, to have a pure heart, and to be a faithful and trustworthy servant.

Every day, be sure to fill your mind with God’s Word. Cry out to Him for wisdom, and be obedient to His commands. Learn to be more sensitive to the Holy Spirit. Let Him teach and guide you. Follow His leading.
