The Rock

Jeremy Bentham was one of the founders of utilitarianism. Born in London in 1748, he believed that the consequences alone should determine if an action is right or wrong. For him, there were no eternal or biblical standards.

He considered nothing to be absolutely bad or good. It was “good” if it tended “to produce pleasure or avert pain.” Things were “bad” if they tended “to produce pain or avert pleasure.”

Bentham’s philosophy caused many to stop believing in the Bible. Some became atheists. A movement spread in which people were encouraged to do only what gave them pleasure in the moment.

Currently, this movement has become a tidal wave. We feel its impact in education and science, economics, politics, philosophy, and religion. We see the influence in the media. All around we find people who reject or ignore Biblical principles, simply doing what they want as long as it gives them pleasure.

More than ever, Christians need to base their lives on the Bible. For there is only one true God. As Moses declared, He is “the Rock.” David agreed: “The Lord is my rock” (Psalm 18:2).

Don’t give in to the relativism that is sweeping throughout the world. Declare that God is your Rock. Depend on His Word. Trust your life to Him. Remember that Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. There is no other choice. No room for compromise.
