The Real Power

To the people of Samaria, Simon was a very special person. In fact, as he performed magic, they considered him to be “the Great Power of God.” But perceptions changed after Philip arrived and displayed the real power of God. Even Simon believed and was baptized, and he was amazed at the miracles and signs that took place.

When Peter and John arrived in the area, many received the power of the Holy Spirit. Simon wanted this power for himself: “Give this authority to me as well, so that everyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit.”

This request revealed his true motives, and Peter responded harshly, “May your silver perish with you, because you thought you could obtain the gift of God with money!” Clearly, Simon’s heart was not right. Peter called on him to repent and seek forgiveness.

Peter also discerned that Simon was “in the gall of bitterness and in the bondage of iniquity.” Alarmed at this rebuke, Simon responded by asking Peter to pray for him “so that nothing of what you have said may come upon me.”

We don’t know what happened to Simon. But, like Simon, we can know that the Holy Spirit is real. His power can bring healing and deliverance, and He can turn around any difficult situation we may be facing. But we cannot buy the Spirit’s power.

Remember: God can turn around any situation. He looks at our hearts, for only those who have clean hands and pure hearts can “stand in His holy place” (Psalm 24:3-4).

Make sure Jesus is your Lord and He has cleansed your heart and mind. Trust that the Holy Spirit will unleash His power in the tough situations you face.
