The Power of Agreement
•2 MinutesAt one time, it seemed like an impossible goal. A project too costly and with too many obstacles. But on this day in 1869, the construction of America’s first transcontinental railroad was completed when a “Golden Spike” was driven into the tracks at Promontory, Utah.
It can be argued that nothing sparked the growth and influence of America more than this monumental achievement. Overnight, distances no longer seemed insurmountable, and travel became more accessible for goods and people.
This lead to an explosion of immigration, settlement of Western lands, and the growth of new industries. More than a symbol, that Spike provided a framework for agreement and showed how people, working together, can accomplish big goals.
The Bible, too, speaks about the power of agreement. Ecclesiastes tells us that, working together, two can accomplish more than one can alone. But when a third person is added, even more is possible.
The Bible teaches that spiritual agreement leads to increased power and effectiveness. Jesus said, “If two of you agree on earth concerning anything that they ask, it will be done for them by My Father in heaven.” That He is with us, any time “two or three are gathered together in My name” (Matthew 18:19-20).
In your life, remember the importance of agreement, and the power of working together with other believers. Seek agreement in prayer. As you unite your hearts, ask God “concerning anything.” Take God at His Word and unleash the power of agreement!
