The Only Way

Much of what we know about the Renaissance period of history is the result of Giorgio Vasari. Born on this day in 1511, Vasari had been a painter but eventually focused on writing. His most famous work was, The Lives of the Most Excellent Painters, Sculptors and Architects (often just called Lives).

This provided a commentary of the art world, with historical biographies and other background. So important is Vasari that a recent biography described him as “the inventor of art.” Since its publication, his book has been an invaluable source of insight and information.

But recently some have argued that many of Vasari’s conclusions were deceptively misleading, and that depending on his perspective, can lead to incomplete impressions. Why? The scope of his examination was limited, and there were many important events and people he knew nothing about.

Today, we read his writings with mixed feelings. Grateful for his anecdotes and insights, we also are somewhat conscious of his limitations. To get a more rounded picture of the past, we no longer can rely exclusively on Vasari. We need other sources as well.

How often our perspective is shaped by the opinions of others. Sometimes these opinions are more accurate than at other times. These opinions can shape our attitudes toward the world and even our faith.

Today, ask yourself on whom are you depending to form your opinions? Many people claim to have the right understanding and know the answers. Some simply urge you to follow them to believe and trust their opinions.

Remember that the Bible teaches that Jesus, alone, is the way, the truth, and the life. That He is the only way to the Father. Others may have opinions, but only Jesus is the Truth. He not only knows the way. He is the Way.
