The Men of Tyre

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

When faced with compromise, Nehemiah resisted the influence of the men of Tyre. Stay faithful to God’s Word, even when others push you to bend.

“People of Tyre were living there who imported fish and all kinds of merchandise, and sold them to the sons of Judah on the Sabbath, even in Jerusalem.”Nehemiah 13:16 NASB

The people of Tyre were traders. For centuries, they and other Phoenicians had dominated commerce throughout the Mediterranean. Demonstrating their commercial skills, men of Tyre imported “all kinds of merchandise.” But, showing no regard for God’s laws, they sold these items on the Sabbath.

Nehemiah knew this kind of compromise was unacceptable to God. He “reprimanded the nobles of Judah,” reminding them that this was an “evil thing,” and they were “profaning the Sabbath day” (v. 17).

He insisted that God’s people return to biblical worship. He ordered the gates to be closed before the Sabbath, not to reopen until after the Sabbath. He stationed guards so “no load would enter on the Sabbath” (v. 19). When traders tried to sneak in, Nehemiah warned them not to do it again, threatening, “I will use force against you” (v. 21). Because of his uncompromising stand, trading on the Sabbath ended.

But to Nehemiah, this wasn’t enough. God’s people needed to have an unwavering commitment to obey Him. So he “ordered the Levites that they were to purify themselves and come as gatekeepers to sanctify the Sabbath day” (v. 22).

Today, all around you, you will see the influence of people just like these men of Tyre, those who weaken your faith, keep you from obeying God, encourage compromise, and spread doubt. Determine to renew your commitment to living according to God’s Word, without compromise or fear.
