The Light

We are to be the light to a lost world just as Paul and Barnabas were lights to the Gentiles.

“Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly and said […] ‘For so the Lord has commanded us, “I have appointed You as a light to the Gentiles, that You may bring salvation to the end of the earth.”’”—Acts 13:46–47 NASB

Many Gentiles of Pisidian Antioch welcomed the Gospel message brought by Paul and Barnabas, but this led to angry opposition from some Jews. Paul responded by quoting Isaiah. The Lord had called him to a mission of evangelism, and he was sent to be “a light for the Gentiles.” God wanted him to preach to everyone because He wanted everyone to hear the message of salvation.

This message brought joy to the Gentiles, who “began rejoicing and glorifying the word of the Lord” (v. 48). They had seen the light. And because Paul and Barnabas were committed to evangelism, many others were saved as “the word of the Lord was being spread through the whole region” (v. 49).

Even though they were persecuted and opposed, Paul and Barnabas continued to shine the light. They were “continually filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit” (vs. 50–52).

Paul understood that followers of Jesus were called to be the light of the world (Matthew 5:14). This call is just as important today. Millions are living in darkness, and God still wants to “bring salvation to the end of the earth.” He wants us to be witnesses to our friends, neighbors, co-workers, and the people we meet in our daily lives as well as the lost worldwide.

Remember, you are the light of the world. Do your part to help take the Good News of Jesus to all people.
