The King of Love

The King of Love

Sir Henry Williams Baker spent most of his adult life serving God as a vicar and hymn writer. The son of a British admiral, he often wrote in a somewhat reflective tone, hoping to encourage thoughtfulness, peace, and calm.

In 1868, inspired by the message of Psalm 23, he wrote the hymn, “The King of Love My Shepherd Is.” Baker described how Jesus’ goodness never fails. “I nothing lack if I am his, and he is mine forever.” Jesus led him by “streams of living water” where his soul could be nourished.

If he strayed, he knew that in love Jesus would seek him and bring him gently home. Jesus will do the same for us today.

Baker would fear no evil as long as He was beside him. And he knew that Jesus would guide him. He knew that God promised him “length of days” and that His goodness never failed.

As we approach the Christmas season, Baker’s hymn reminds us of how much God loves us. It was no accident that the angels announced his birth to shepherds. In fact, Jesus came to be our Good Shepherd (John 10:11).

Through every season, Jesus can be your Shepherd. Are you worried? Afraid? Remember, you can trust Him. Do you feel lost? Uncertain where to go? Commit your way to Him. Let Him direct your path. He promised you peace and provision.
