The Impact of Folly

Inspiration MinistriesBy Inspiration Ministries2 Minutes

“Dead flies cause the ointment of the perfumer to putrefy [and] send forth a vile odor; so does a little folly [in him who is valued for wisdom] outweigh wisdom and honor.”- Ecclesiastes 10:1 Amplified Bible

Our actions and decisions have impact, not only on ourselves but on others, and the world around us. The Bible suggests that we can think about this impact like their fragrance. In one way or another, the impact lingers. Like the attractive bouquet of an expensive perfume, or a decidedly repulsive odor.

The Bible pictures wisdom as like the “ointment of the perfumer.” This is pleasant, with a magical appeal. A fragrance that can lift our spirits, enhance our lives, and make the world a more beautiful, enjoyable place. This is the byproduct of God’s wisdom, which gives us perspective and hope. It shines a light on our circumstances and reveals where we should walk (and what we should avoid). It helps us feel good about life, and ourselves.

This is not “intelligence” or just a collection of information. This wisdom only comes from God. It changes us in positive ways, enabling us to understand the world as He sees it. And it impacts everything we do and helps us make the right decisions.

But the Bible also warns of the harmful impact of “a little folly,” using the graphic description of dead flies. They can ruin even the most satisfying of odors. What was designed to smell wonderful becomes a source of irritation and ugliness. Instead of attracting, it repels.

This is what happens when we allow our lives to be corrupted by “a little folly.”

In your life, stay on guard against the poisoning impact of “a little folly.” Remember, it doesn’t take much to tarnish the beautiful things God has given you. Just a little. Seek the wisdom that comes only from Him. Fill your mind with His Word. Seek Him through prayer. Become more sensitive to His Spirit.

Prayer: Father, free me from folly. Guide me by Your Spirit. Give me wisdom and understanding. Help me to serve and please You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
